Statement of Cathy Chase, President, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, on the Letter Sent by 18 Attorneys General to Upgrade Child Passenger Safety
Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) commends Attorneys General from seventeen states and the District of Columbia for the letter they sent today calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take long-overdue action to better protect child passengers. Improving the labeling of child passenger safety seat packaging, encouraging the delay of transition into the next safety seat until the child is physically and developmentally ready to do so, and moving forward to create a side impact standard for child safety seats as was first requested by Congress in 2000 are necessary steps which should be prioritized by the Agency. Most parents and caregivers likely assume these protections are already happening, but they are not, leaving a dangerous and potentially deadly void. Our most vulnerable passengers deserve and need these upgrades. Now is the time for NHTSA to deliver.
