New Report to Reveal “Best and Worst” States, Rate 50 States and DC on Highway Safety Laws

New Opinion Poll to be Released on Distracted Driving

And Marijuana-Impaired Driving

Tens of Thousands Killed on our Roads Every Year —

With State Legislative Sessions Beginning, Time to Take Action

WHAT:

NEWS CONFERENCE & WEBCAST – The 2020 Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws will rank all 50 states and the District of Columbia on the passage of 16 essential traffic safety laws.  Each state and DC will be given a “green,” “yellow,” or “red” rating based on the number of optimal traffic safety laws enacted.

The report card will provide state-specific data, an assessment of each state’s actions to reduce the tragic toll of preventable deaths and injuries on our Nation’s roadways, and opportunities for each state to enhance safety during this year’s legislative session.  Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and a panel of health, safety and law enforcement experts and activists will release the Roadmap Report, unveil the “Best and Worst” states, and identify needed state action in 2020.

Among the speakers is Jennifer Weaver of Charles County, MD.  Ms. Weaver began her advocacy against distracted driving following her involvement in a 2015 car crash.

This press conference will also include the results of a new public opinion survey commissioned by Advocates on the issues of distracted driving and marijuana-impaired driving.

With 100 people on average being killed and thousands more being injured in crashes every day on our roadways, imposing an annual cost burden of nearly one trillion dollars, the need for swift action at the state and federal level could not be any clearer.
