OH: House Bill 463 Will Weaken Teen Driver Safety LawOctober 22, 2026
OH: The number of crashes & crash deaths among teens are disproportionately high. Per mile driven, teen drivers have crash rates nearly 4x higher than drivers aged 20+. Lowering the minimum driving age to 15 would increase risk for all. We oppose HB 463.
🧵What to know during Teen Driver Safety Week:
1. Over 750 teens (aged 15-18) were killed in 2024 according to @NHTSAgov
2. Teen & young adult novice drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes because they lack driving experience & tend to take greater risks.
7. GDL programs should prohibit unsupervised driving starting at 8pm
and
8. Non-familial teen passengers should be prohibited from riding with a teen driver without adult supervision.
These GDL components are based on research on how to best help teens learn to drive safely.
Use the GDL calculator from @IIHS_autosafety to learn how many lives can be saved by upgrading your state's GDL program. #TeenDriverSafetyWeek
🆕 | Our first crash prevention ratings for commercial vehicles show that most cargo vans and Class 3 pickups need better systems that more reliably detect pedestrians and other vehicles.

Our statement on new @IIHS_autosafety ratings out today for cargo vans and work pickups and the need for a final rule from @NHTSAgov to require automatic emergency braking (AEB) on all new heavy vehicles as required by law.
