Consumer, public health, safety and law enforcement organizations, trucking companies, truck drivers, and victims of truck crashes and their families, sent the following letter about the long overdue electronic logging device (ELD) rule to Members of the House Small Business Committee. ELDs are a proven and cost-effective way to reduce truck driver fatigue and save lives. Any attempt to delay or carve out exemptions to the ELD rule will jeopardize the safety of truckers and all road users.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) opposes any attempts to slam the brakes on full implementation of the long overdue electronic logging device (ELD) rule. Members of the trucking industry have known about this rule for years and have had ample time to prepare for it. Exemptions will compromise the effectiveness of the rule, jeopardize safety, and make it difficult for law enforcement to enforce.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) commends Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), as well as Representatives Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) and Albio Sires (D-NJ) for introducing commonsense legislation (S. 1883/H.R. 3882) that would require obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screenings and treatment for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers.
