Statement on New National Academies of Sciences Impaired Driving Report

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) commends the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NAS) for issuing their new report, “Getting to Zero Alcohol-Impaired Driving Fatalities: A Comprehensive Approach to a Persistent Problem.” I was honored to participate as an advisor to NAS as they compiled research and recommendations for the report focusing on alcohol-impaired driving, the largest cause of motor vehicle fatalities.

Press Conference on Monday Jan. 22 at Noon for Advocates’ Report Card of State Highway Safety Laws

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) will release its 2018 Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws ranking all 50 states and the District of Columbia on the passage of 16 essential traffic safety laws. State legislative action is critical in light of the 8.4% increase in 2015 and another 5.6% jump in 2016 in highway fatalities. Preliminary figures for the first half of 2017 show no substantial reversal to 37,461 fatalities in 2016.

Leading safety and consumer advocates will reveal the results of a new public opinion poll regarding autonomous vehicles (AVs), also referred to as “driverless cars.” A CARAVAN poll conducted in December 2017 exposed widespread concerns across major segments of American society about sharing the road with driverless cars and the lack of government oversight to ensure auto manufacturer accountability as they are developed and deployed on public roads.
