More Than 75 Groups Ask Senate to Oppose Flawed Driverless Car Bill

A broad alliance of local, state and national organizations representing safety, law enforcement and first responders, public health, bicyclists and pedestrians, engineering, environmental and consumer groups, disability communities and families affected by motor vehicle crashes sent this letter to Senators urging them to oppose the AV START Act (S. 1885).  This deficient bill fails to sufficiently address known problems revealed by the dangerous and deadly crashes involving vehicles equipped with highly and partially automated driving systems.

Advocates’ Statement on School Bus and Bus Stop Crashes

The recent crashes in Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina and Pennsylvania that killed at least five children and injured at least 23 people highlight the dangers our children face as they travel to and from school each day. Proven countermeasures to make school buses safer comprise the School Bus Safety Act (S. 3432/H.R. 6773) including requiring school buses to have seat belts in every seat and effective safety technologies like automatic emergency braking and electronic stability control systems.

Statement on New Truck Safety Technology Poll

Today, a new poll commissioned by Road Safe America revealed that Americans overwhelmingly support Congress requiring the use of speed limiters and automatic emergency braking (AEB) on large trucks.  This clarion call for proven safety technology is warranted considering the skyrocketing number of fatal truck crashes on our roads. We urge Congress to listen to the telling results of this survey and take action now to require proven truck safety technologies on our roadways.

Statement on National Teen Driver Safety Week

This National Teen Driver Safety Week (Oct. 21-27, 2018), Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) calls on state elected officials to take immediate action to address tragic yet preventable motor vehicle crashes happening on our roads.  While every state has at least one component of a teen graduated driver licensing (GDL) program, no state has all six elements, as rated by Advocates’ 2018 Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws.  Today, Advocates sent the Roadmap report and a letter to all 50 governors and the mayor of DC urging them to eradicate the dangerous gaps in their GDL laws.
