MEDIA ALERT: Virtual Press Conference on Lack of Needed Safety Upgrades in the U.S. Senate “Surface Transportation Investment Act of 2021”

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) joined by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Edward Markey (D-MA) families of truck crash, “hot car” and seatback failure victims, safety & consumer advocates, public health experts and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will call on the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to include urgently needed safety upgrades in surface transportation legislation scheduled for consideration by the Committee on June 16.

Statement in Support of the Reduce Impaired Driving for Everyone Act (RIDE Act) of 2021

We applaud Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and Rick Scott (R-FL) for their leadership and dedication to curb impaired driving by introducing the RIDE Act. This bipartisan legislation answers the urgent call for innovative solutions to meaningfully reduce the more than 10,000 deaths caused by drunk driving each year.

Statement: Truck Driver Hours of Service Rule Challenged in Federal Court by Coalition of Driver and Safety Groups

In June, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced drastic changes to federal truck driver hours of service (HOS) rules. Under the guise of increased flexibility, the changes will further exacerbate the already well-known threat of fatigue among commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers by significantly weakening current HOS rules. As such, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Parents Against Tired Truckers (PATT) and Citizens for Reliable and Safe Highways (CRASH) have filed a petition today with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit seeking to invalidate this flawed rule. The parties are represented by Public Citizen Litigation Group.
