Joint Statement on the AV START Act (S. 1885)

Our neighborhood streets should not be turned into industry proving grounds.  Unless crucial safeguards called for by a broad coalition are added to AV START, Senators should oppose this dangerous bill and reject any attempts to circumvent open discussion and debate by attaching it to must-pass legislation.  We believe driverless vehicles may have the potential to reduce crashes and improve accessibility, but it is clear that day is still far away.  Rushing through a driverless vehicle bill that lacks fundamental safeguards will make our roads less safe and risks turning an already skeptical public even more against this technology.

Advocates’ Letter on New Jersey Ignition Interlock Device Law

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates), an alliance of consumer, safety, medical and public health groups, and insurance companies working together to pass highway and auto safety laws that prevent crashes, save lives, reduce injuries, and contain costs, supports enactment of Senate Bill (S.) 824/Assembly Bill (A.) 2089 to require the use of ignition interlock devices (IIDs) by all convicted drunk drivers, including first time offenders.  We urge you to join the 32 other states, including neighboring New York and Delaware, that have made their streets and highways safer by enacting an all-offender IID law.

Press Call on AV START and New Driverless Car Poll

Today, leading safety, consumer and bicycling advocates, law enforcement, and tech and automation experts urged the U.S. Senate to add critical safeguards to the AV START Act (S. 1885), a bill that will set policy on autonomous vehicles (AVs), also known as driverless cars, for decades to come.  As early as this week, sponsors of the bill could attempt to “give it a ride” on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act (S. 1405).
