Over the five-day period from today through to July 4, approximately 500 people will die and 32,500 more will be injured in preventable crashes. These eye-popping numbers should be even more attention-getting than a fireworks finale. State elected officials throughout the country need to take swift action to make their roads and highways safer.

This is the 15th edition of an annual report that rates all 50 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.) on the adoption of 16 fundamental traffic safety laws. This “report card” exposes over 400 missing safety laws nationwide. It is an essential tool that state elected officials should use to improve roadway safety for all motorists as 2018 state legislative sessions kick off.
