Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) submitted written testimony for a November 17, 2021 hearing held by the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, “Industry and Labor Perspectives: A Further Look at North American Supply Chain Challenges.”  The statement focused on dangers associated with proposals to weaken existing truck safety rules and allow the deployment of autonomous trucks.

The Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation (INVEST) in America Act (H.R. 3684), passed by the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on a bipartisan vote, includes provisions to produce meaningful safety gains, especially in the areas of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and protecting vulnerable road users including pedestrians and bicyclists.

Joint Statement on House Transportation & Infrastructure’s “INVEST in America Act”

Today the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure released legislation that takes affirmative steps towards a future of safer roads, drivers and vehicles; however, it also includes a significant carve-out from proven safety technology for special trucking interests.  The “INVEST in America Act”, includes numerous provisions that if enacted have the potential to significantly reduce motor vehicle crashes and fatalities.  Yesterday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released data showing 38,680 crash deaths in 2020, representing a 7.2 percent increase and 13-year high despite a drop in the number of miles driven on U.S. roads last year.  The data also showed alarming increases in reckless behavior such as speeding, impaired driving and lack of seat belt use.

Group Letter to House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee on “INVEST in America Act”

On June 4, 2021, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) sent a group letter to the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure about the “INVEST in America Act.”  The letter was signed by groups representing auto safety, consumer rights and highway safety advocates, public health and the victims of fatal truck crashes.
