Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) sent the message below to Congress on July 25, 2021:

Please take 2 minutes to read this message from Michelle and Jason Fraser (Texas): “On behalf of our daughter, Jayden Faith, and the thousands of families that have suffered catastrophic injuries or deaths as a result of preventable seatback failures, today we call on Congress to modernize the seatback standard that for 54 years has failed to protect families like mine.  Far too many families will never see their children or loved ones again because they died because of a seatback collapse.  We hope the Senate will act quickly to finish what the House has started to help spare even one more family from suffering what my family, and too many others like ours, have had to suffer.”

What Michelle and Jason Ask You To Do

Congress must take action now in the infrastructure/transportation bill to prevent crashes, deaths & injuries.

  • Children (and adults) who are properly restrained in the rear seat of a vehicle are being needlessly killed or seriously injured when a seatback fails. The federal standard for seatbacks has remained relatively unchanged since 1967. S. DOT must be required to improve the seatback standard by a date certain.

In honor of the millions of families like the Frasers whose loved ones are injured in crashes each year, meaningful safety advances must be included in the bill.  Failure to do so will result in 183,000 people killed and 14 million injured at a cost of $5 trillion over the 5-year span of the legislation.
