CA: Gov. Newsom Should Sign Law Extending Critical Program to Combat Drunk Driving

150 150 Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

Advocates has sent a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) requesting that he sign into law Assembly Bill (AB) 366 to extend the ignition interlock device (IID) program.

The Golden State has the second most drunk driving fatalities of any state with 1,355 people needlessly killed in 2023.

Extending the IID law, which otherwise will sunset on January 1, 2026, will save lives. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), IIDs prevented over 28,000 attempts to drive drunk in California in 2020 alone.

We also hope to work with the governor to enact an all-offender IID law in 2026.
