Advocates has sent letters of support to the Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety and Senate Committee on Transportation and Local Government for Senate Bill (SB) 375/Assembly Bill (AB) 371. This bill would allow a pilot program in Milwaukee for automated enforcement (AE) through speed safety cameras on roads under city jurisdiction and red light safety cameras at up to five locations per aldermanic district. AE is a proven technology and a vital tool to ensure roadway safety.
In 2023, 583 people were killed in traffic crashes in Wisconsin, a 15 percent increase since 2014. Fatalities involving speeding increased 10 percent from 2014 to 2023, and speeding is a factor in nearly one-third of the state’s traffic fatalities, killing 185 people in 2023. Additionally, the Badger State incurs $6.3 billion in economic harm due to motor vehicle crashes, which is equivalent to $1,084 per resident according to a 2019 analysis. When updated for inflation alone, in 2025, costs would equate to nearly $8 billion and $1,368 respectively.
