Advocates is calling on New York leaders to enact “Sammy’s Law” as part of this year’s budget process. This measure will improve safety by permitting New York City to decrease speed limits from 25 to 20 miles per hour (mph) on residential streets. Excess speed contributes to both the frequency and severity of motor vehicle crashes and proves especially dangerous for vulnerable road users. Speed limit reductions are a proven safety measure. Seattle experienced a 17-20 percent decline in crashes after decreasing speed limits by 5 mph.
