Advocates has called on Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to veto Senate Bill (SB) 1019. SB 1019 prohibits the use of automated enforcement (AE) systems, an effective technology to deter speeding and red light running.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,304 people lost their lives on Arizona roads in 2023, a 69 percent increase since 2014. In addition, traffic crashes exact a financial toll. In 2019, the estimated cost of traffic crashes in Arizona surpassed $5.9 billion, equating to a $817 “crash tax” on each Arizonan. When updated for inflation, in 2025, costs would equate to $7.5 billion and $1,031 respectively. Clearly, traffic safety is a serious issue that urgently needs improvement rather than the dismantling of an effective traffic safety countermeasure.
