CA: Advocates Calls on Senate to Restore AB 366 to Its Original Life-Saving Language

150 150 Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

In a letter to California Senate President Pro Tempore McGuire Advocates called on the Senate to restore Assembly Bill (AB) 366 to its original intent to upgrade the law to require the use of ignition interlock devices (IIDs) by all convicted drunk drivers, including first time offenders. The bill was amended by the Senate Appropriations Committee to remove all-offender IID language. The current version of AB 366 would extend California’s IID pilot program for another seven years.

With 1,355 people needlessly killed in drunk driving crashes on California roads in 2023 action is needed. States that have adopted IID laws for all offenders are saving lives, reducing injuries and preventing drunk driving recidivism.

We urge the Senate to restore AB 366 and have California join the majority of states which have enacted all-offender IID laws.
