Leading safety organizations, including Advocates, have called on the Senate Transportation Committee and Assembly Transportation Committee to advance Senate Bill (S.) 53/Assembly Bill (A.) 1232. This legislation will lower the per se limit for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) to .05 percent blood alcohol concentration (BAC), deter drunk driving and save lives.
Drunk driving is a deadly and costly threat to New York families. In 2023, 325 people were needlessly killed in drunk driving crashes in New York, accounting for 29 percent of traffic fatalities, according to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
